Glycolic Acid (a form of an AHA) is extremely strong and must be handled with extreme care. Please be cautious in your formulations that contain glycolic acid. It is not necessary to use large percentages of glycolic acid in order to have a positive effect on the skin, as this pH is 1.5.
While the FDA does allow the use of 10% in “at home” products, Essential Wholesale advises that you experiment with percentage ranges of 1-5% in your formulations. We have found that smaller percentages used more often can be more effective and less traumatic to the skin than high doses used irregularly. Recovery time should be a matter of hours and not days or weeks as with some glycolic acid products on the market.
If you manufacture a high glycolic acid product you should also sell a recovery serum, oil or masque. According to the FDA, “the panel concluded that AHA's are ‘safe for use in cosmetic products at concentrations less than or equal to 10 percent, at final formulation pH's greater than or equal to 3.5, when formulated to avoid increasing the skin's sensitivity to the sun, or when directions for use include the daily use of sun protection.’
For salon use products, the panel said that the products are ‘safe for use at concentrations less than or equal to 30 percent, at final formulation pH's greater than or equal to 3.0, in products designed for brief, discontinuous use followed by thorough rinsing from the skin, when applied by trained professionals, and when application is accompanied by directions for the daily use of sun protection.’”
The FDA requires that you include this warning on any product made with AHAs:
Sunburn Alert: This product contains an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that may increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun and particularly the possibility of sunburn. Use a sunscreen and limit sun exposure while using this product and for a week afterwards.
