Styrax benzoin May 21, 2008 Reviewer: Anonymous person from St. Charles, IL United States   Benzoin Resin (styrax benzoin) is a natural gum resin from a species of the Styrax tree, native to Southeast Asia. The resin is collected from the bark of the tree, similar to other gum resins (frankincense and myrrh). Benzoin has a sweet, balsamic, vanilla-like aroma that is considered soothing and comforting.  It is often used as a fixative, slowing the dispersion of essential oils and other fragrance materials into the air.
